Celebrating Heritage With Roxanne Wingate
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), Cox is casting a spotlight on some of the employees who make up our rich and diverse company culture. We asked people like Roxanne Wingate who supports the media and public relations efforts for Cox Communications, about the importance of inclusion in the workplace.
The Latinx community is made up of people from many ethnic groups with diverse histories, languages, countries of origin, and cultures. In this Q&A, Roxanne Wingate shares her thoughts on the importance of inclusion in the workplace and the beauty, diversity and strength of the Latino community.
How has your culture and upbringing influenced how you have lived your life? How has it also influenced how you show up every day for work?
I grew up in a small border town in Arizona, with a deep bicultural and bilingual lifestyle. My youth was shaped by American family sitcoms as well as Mexican novelas, I listened to both English and Spanish language music, and we ate both traditional Mexican and American dishes. For me, it was the best of both worlds! Having a blend of both cultures has greatly influenced my perspective on life and has also influenced my career choices. I’ve been fortunate that with every job I’ve held, I’ve been able to use my bilingual skills. And each job has also had a connection to our Hispanic community – something that is extremely important to me.
How does your Hispanic / Latinx heritage play into your traditions, beliefs and lifestyle? How do you keep those traditions alive?
My culture has influenced so many aspects of my life, from the music I enjoy, to the food I love to eat, to the traditions I keep alive in my family. I want my kids to have the same sense of pride I had growing up – proud to be American, while also taking great pride in our Mexican roots.
What do you think is important for others at the company to know about your experience being Hispanic or Latinx in corporate America and at Cox?
I am a proud Latina, and it is a big part of who I am. It is important that we see each other for who we are. It tells our story. For me, being Mexican American is a part of my story. We all bring different perspectives in life, and it’s important that we recognize that at work. When we can recognize and equally celebrate all our similarities and differences, it makes for a great working environment. When inclusivity is expressed, authenticity can thrive.
What do you think is the greatest need to move the Hispanic / Latinx community forward – and how can others help?
Hispanics are one of the largest and fastest growing populations in our country. We have a deep impact on the economy, politics and even the workplace. We are a diverse community, representing many countries, traditions and beliefs. And it’s important to recognize that. We need to break down negative stereotypes about our community by educating others about the beauty, diversity and strength of the Latino community.
